Small Dog Training Tips

Small dogs are Awesome! From Chihuahuas to Dachshunds to Terriers, small dogs are the best.

Small dog training can exciting, fun, and challenging all at the same time. Don't make the mistake of thinking of your dog as a person. It is still an animal that has animal instincts. Your dog simply desires to be accepted as a member of the pack. When you are trying to train your dog, you want to make sure you know what your dog needs from you and then it's your job to learn how to provide that. Dog training and scolding just don't go together. When you are trying to change your dogs bad behavior you need to focus on helping your dog learn a different way of expressing their instincts.

Key Elements of Small Dog Training

Focus on these basic tasks and it will make training your dog much easier.

 Crate Training

Your dog needs a home of its own. A crate or equivalent is a great option for a small dog. Most small dog training manuals and programs agree that a crate for your dog will reduce common small dog issues such as barking, house breaking, and small dog separation anxiety. Remember your dogs crate should not be used as a punishment.

Leash Training

Dogs with leash issues are usually the ones that have been allowed to run ahead and pull when on the leash. Start your dog training off right. Help your dog reach a calm and controlled state before the walk. This will help them respond better to your commands. If you dog pulls on the leash during a walk, have them sit and wait at your side for a moment before you begin the walk again. This will help your dog associate that pulling sensation with the walk stopping instead of a signal just to pull at you harder.

The Alpha Position

Remember, YOU are the leader of the pack, not your dog. Dog training is your job and not your dogs. Don't let your dog lead you. It's important that your dog understand that you are in control and that you are the leader. All your dog really wants is to be a member of your pack. When your dog understands its position in your pack, it will be able to relax and enjoy life.

 Obedience Training

Obedience training is a very important part of small dog training. Your dog needs obedience training, whether you take a class or buy a home training product. The rewards are well worth the small investment of time and money. The training will help you learn how to maintain your alpha position as well as help you create the environment that your small dog needs to thrive.

Consistency is Critical

Small dog training requires consistency. If you are trying to teach your dog to sit still before you go outside to play, but you only make them do that part of the time, your dog will end up confused. The end result will be that your dog will have difficulty following your commands. If you are setting up a rule with your dog, then make sure you are consistent with it. Dogs are smart, but more than anything they respond to their owners. If you are consistent in your commands, your dog will be consistent in obeying.

I hope these tips are helpful. Feel free to ask questions.

Love your dog and they will love you!
